Matthew Wyatt
Associate
BAS, MArch (prof), Registered Architect ANZIA
The opportunity to contribute to the urban and social landscape through his vocation is what drives Matthew - a mission to make architecture that plays its part in reshaping the built environment for better.
Matthew translates skills picked up as a former elite-level track-and-field athlete to his day to day, leaning into the project-management side of the business. He embeds formidable focus, unwavering discipline, strategic thinking and an eye for efficiencies across work in the residential, educational, heritage and commercial sectors.
A graduate of Unitec, Matthew combines practical and theoretical learnings in his role, but it is the people contact he loves the most. Articulating ideas to clients, contractors and across the RTA Studio team is his passion and strength, and he enjoys the dynamic nature of the business where nimbleness and the ability to meet a deadline keeps things interesting.
Matthew, who joined RTA Studio in 2016, finds real reward in his work on educational facilities such as Tongariro High School and Freemans Bay Primary – projects where design outcomes create stimulating environments as well as sanctuary and safe zones for young people.
As an international long-jumper, and now athletics coach in a mix of events, he can’t wait for the chance to explore the relatively untapped realm of sports-facility design.
Matthew is married to an architect – and they make a matchless team. At home, she’s the creative director and he puts the plans into action. Even if that’s just putting up a set of shelves.
“Architecture can contribute to social change and social good; it’s a giving-back conversation.”
