RTA Studio Studio
RTA Studio sought a new studio space that aligned with our values of sustainability, collaboration, and design excellence. When 7 McDonald Street became available, it provided an ideal opportunity to transform an existing industrial building into a vibrant architectural workspace. Through a collaborative workshop process, our team developed a design brief focusing on openness, sustainability, and functionality.
The project involved repurposing the former Kirtlan Engineering building into a contemporary studio that retained its industrial heritage. The space includes an open-plan work area for 34 workstations, meeting rooms, breakout spaces, a social kitchen, and a covered courtyard. The existing steel structure, concrete floors, and gantry beams were preserved, reinforcing the building’s character while reducing material waste.
The project incorporates Fisher & Paykel’s Home Solutions package, integrating solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and hot water heat pumps to minimize energy consumption. Large glazed openings enhance natural ventilation and daylighting, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and cooling. Landscaped outdoor areas create a connection to nature, promoting wellbeing for staff.
This adaptive reuse project balances heritage retention with modern workplace needs. The result is a studio that fosters creativity, collaboration, and environmental consciousness, contributing to the wellbeing of both its occupants.
